Laura Melville Thomas, AIA, is a Principal Architect with over 30 years of experience in corporate and residential architecture. During her career she has maintained a strong relationship with the visual and artistic part of the practice and has demonstrated in her work the interdependent nature of art and architecture. Travel and critical observation have been and continues to be an important part of her growth as an architect and much of this can be found in her sketches and watercolors.
Laura founded Melville Thomas Architects in 1987 after spending her formative years with Perry, Dean, Rogers and Partners, Boston MA, Cochran, Stephenson and Donkervoet, Baltimore MD, and Verkerke, Boyles, Linehan and Doyle, Baltimore MD. She graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Virginia Tech in 1980. Since then Laura has distinguished herself both in and out of the architectural community as a role model for women in architecture and young graduate architects, as an instructor at the Maryland Institute College of Art, as an activist for family causes at the Johns Hopkins Hospital Children's Center, and as a member of the architectural review board for the Roland Park Foundation. Her work and comments on the profession of architecture have appeared in numerous publications. Her watercolors appear regularly at local galleries, in special exhibits, at businesses, and in promotional materials from institutional clients.
Laura’s work is available as notes cards or prints at select retail outlets or by mail. Custom watercolors are also available.
